Hey guys, I wanted to write this journal because I see something that's kind of a bad trend happening alot. What I'm talking about here is using copy written material.

I'm not talking about intentional, flat out creative theft. Art theft is bad, mmkay? LOL we all know this. What I'm talking about is a form of theft that people seem to think "isn't a big deal" and some such.

The thing I see is this. People use other people's work in their work and do not credit. Like, for instance, I ran across a flash piece that was on the front page of DA today. I recognized the music in it as being from the PS2 RPG Radiata Story. The person says, right in the description something like "props if you can guess where the music is from!" Um, we shouldn't have to guess cuz, uh, you shoulda credited it.

The alarming thing is, She was a seasoned artist. This person has been doing this stuff and had many comments and page views and I know page views don't matter, but what I'm getting at is, this is not a newbie sort of mistake. I am seeing more or less professional people, people that should know better do this kind of thing!

Another example I see often is, someone draws their cute anime character and then goes and rips a pick off of google, runs it through the cut out filter in photoshop, and profits! If it's your photo, or a royalty free photo, awesome, but a good part of the time it's not!

The last part of this is, people think that if it's professional, if it's from a published work, that it's free use. It's not. And the folks that actually made said work probibly feel the same way about creative theft as most of you and I do.

Sooooo, uh, the moral of the story kids? If you didn't make it, CREDIT who did or AT LEAST where you found it. It's not hard, and it makes you cool for being considerate and it also covers your ass, so you have no reason not to.

Peace guys. and seriously. A quarter of a million dollars PER copy is the bottom going rate for loosing a copy right case in the United States at least. So hopefully this wakes some people up. If you know someone that needs to know this, link em here and have em read this.

A quarter mil...that's not worth not crediting guys.

peace.

Uh huh, oxygen is just as important.
:icondarklion:
Oh yea, same here. and reference is ok. I use referenced a lot, a whooole lot. The only time it's an issue is when people actually use something published as part of their piece and don't credit. that can get them in trouble.

They say that evil knows no bounds... that must be why bad guys keep falling off of cliffs, castle tops, and high rises. If they knew bounds... they could mark it off with yellow caution tape and avoid the whole "falling to one's doom" routine.
