Ok, I gotta rant on something here. What is with artists these days on DA? Specifically, what is with all the praise mongering?

Now, maybe I'm in a glass house when I speak on this, but frankly, the only time I lit into someone is if I think they are intentionally being hard to get along with. If they are really truly being disrespectful. Sure, I may have had my share of giving billy-o-and-what-for to someone that didn't deserve it because I miss read what they meant or something, we all have.

But what I'm getting at is worse than that! So far I have lost respect within the last four months for at least three really recognizable artists on this sight because of how they act to commenters.

For example: (no names. you know who you are.) There was this artist with amazing work. I faved her work often, paid her complements often, and I even expressed my support to her when she was dealing with an issue with a couple other artists. Well, in a search for TLK art, I found her pic of Simba. It.....did not look like simba, at all. I mean, this was beyond the "it's just in her style" clause. Sooo, I decided to very politely voice my opinion and offer some friendly suggestions, you know, a c-r-i-t-i-q-u-e Yea, that word, that long lost thing that DA was originally meant for, right?

So she snapped off hardcore at me. yup. I tried to state my point in a better, more explanatory way and also indicated to her that that sort of nastiness was not necessary. She exploded at me, attacking me as a person and then blocking me.

(By the way, to anyone that knows who this is and wants to come here and defend her, this is my journal and I don't have to leave her anonymous you know. so don't start a war over this where there doesn't need to be one.)

That's just one. Another one played out exactly the same way. Another extreamly popular artist. I watched her work for a long time now. There was a piece that was not really her best, plus, I feel she overworked most of her pieces, so I critiqued, making sure to be nice, give the good with the bad, and offered some thoughts on ways that she might avoid overworking pieces. The rest is a perfect mirror of story number one. She explodes, I explain, she deomonizes and blocks. XD

So now we are at contestant number three. I love this person's work. It's brilliant work, honestly. But this one commission she did looked exactly like a published character (will not say more because as I say, i'm attempting to be honorable and keep them anonymous. If you do know though, remember, that anonymity can change. this is a rant on MY journal so deal with it. I'll have no flame wars and drama here.)

Anywho, I noted to her the similarities, but never the less, I acknowledge that the character was all to simple and there for easy to make similar. Well, she bit my head off and she threw the very fact, that I had noted to her in the first place about the character being kind of a duh concept and there for easily similar, back in my face. It was RUDE and at the end she even put "not trying to be rude but..." oh, it was rude, so let's not pretend there.

I sent my usual shocked response (though I dunno why I am shocked by anything people do anymore.) explaining my point better and attempting to show that I was saying what I said to be helpful. That was today. what do you guys think? Will she give me a verbal spanking and then block me? LOL *faceplants*

So, popular artists, you folk with a fandom, what, do you think you are celebrities? oh now you have everyone oooing and awwing and so you don't have anything more to learn from life and certainly not from us peons bellow you?

Now I know why people don't comment anymore. Wow.

I'm sorry folks. this was ranty but it just PISSES me off that so many people, who's work I liked, decided to behave in such a childish, unprofessional manner. And the saddest part is, now I really can't look at their work with the same innocent admiration that I once did.

It's kinda like finding out that actor you idolized as a kid is really rude, rich scum. It really sucks.

<.<....>.>.......<.<......>.>....O.O

dA is just not a place people go when they want honest critique. dA is just a place to get asspats. It's kind of a shame, but it's true.
Yes, I am here, and I like asspats. Asspats are what keep me drawing. I am so utterly self critical of my work that I think everything looks absolutely TERRIBLE until I post it here and I have my usual handful of people tell me what they like about it. It keeps me going.
However, if someone offers me a critique I love that too, and I press them for more and get all I can get out of it. Real good critiques are rare around here, because that's not what this site is really for. I've learned that and come to accept it.
Popular artists on dA are popular, but not necessarily good in the sense that they're continuing to improve. Once an artist gets to a certain level where enough people look up to them they need to make a choice. Either they keep on just posting to dA, drawing the same thing at the same level over and over again, getting the asspats and growing stagnant, or they branch out to other more serious sites that are all about critique and improvement.
So, anyways, this has gotten way off topic. I think I'm just trying to say that it sucks but it's true and try not to let it get to you too much?

I hear you and I agree. sadly, it wasn't always the case though. I mean, i'm not talking hard crits. I can understand those being hard to swallow. The ones i'm talking about were usually just something small and usually given with asspats so as to show that I still like it, this is just something I see. I think you are right that that is what DA's become, but when I first started here, it wasn't. It was, and still is intended to be a sight where we learn and grow from each other. part of that is through complement and critique.

But I get what you are saying and don't worry. i'm not losing sleep over losers. I just had to vent a bit. XD

Well Amigo... I've dealt with that too... Most new, and/or aspiring artists have dealt with it... If you think it's really unfair, and wish to frag them zealously - contact the Gallery Director for the type of work they mostly produce and tell them about your experience.

Mostly though - Letting it go, like water through your fingers, flowing the negativity out and away - is perhaps the best way to handle it. People - are douches. Myself included.

By the way - Kudos to you =knight-owl - It's rare that someone with nearly 30K pv's has that philosophy - i'm impressed!

Thanks for the Kudos, I'm not a popular artist by any stretch, but even if someday I am, I vow never to be like the ones he's ranting about. :)

Venting is always helpful =P
And yeah, even the slightest negative thing that's said about someone's art can cause them and their screaming fanbase to totally flip out. I've only been here a bit over three years, but it seems like it's been that way from the start from what I've seen.
I've yet to find a website that's a happy medium between asspats and critique. Usually before too long, art sites go one way or the other. And then of course there's sites like furaffinity that allow porn and just go the way of "oooh so yiffy, I wish that was me *FAP FAP FAP FAP*" etc.

Ouch. I can't say I know what the artists you're talking about are feeling, since I'm a writer and I don't have a lot of viewers. But...that sounds a bit harsh. I always try to be polite when I give a critique comment, giving a bad point they need to fix and good point I liked. I don't think I've ever had someone blow up at me before, though. Some people are just silly sometimes though. Maybe they were going through something at the time that made them make less-then-good work and gave them a snappy attitude?

I dunno. it seems to me that when people cap 30k page views some of them really cave to the fame and start behaving like little celebrities. I have run into it alot and I hit a string of em just real recently and it upset me a bit so I had to vent. that's all XD yea, I'm a writer too. That stuff never get's posted though. very few people get to see that stuff. I am writing a book and aiming to publish though XD

They say that evil knows no bounds... that must be why bad guys keep falling off of cliffs, castle tops, and high rises. If they knew bounds... they could mark it off with yellow caution tape and avoid the whole "falling to one's doom" routine.
